To become a security officer in Texas, you must meet specific training and licensing requirements governed by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) – Private Security P

Unarmed Security Officer (Level II) Requirements:

1. Minimum Age & Legal Eligibility

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
  • No disqualifying criminal history (background check required)

2. Level II Training Course

  • Complete an 8-hour Level II Non-Commissioned Security Officer Training Course
  • Topics include:
    • Role of a security officer
    • Texas laws related to arrest, search, and seizure
    • Use of force laws
    • Ethics and professionalism
    • Report writing and emergency procedures

3. Application to Texas DPS

  • Submit fingerprints for a background check
  • Apply online via the Texas Online Private Security (TOPS) portal
  • Pay licensing fees

Armed Security Officer (Level III) Requirements:

1. Must First Complete Level II

  • You must already be a registered Level II officer.

2. Level III Commissioned Officer Training

  • Complete a 45-hour Level III Training Course at a licensed training school
  • Curriculum includes:
    • Firearms safety and qualification
    • Use of force
    • Defensive tactics
    • Legal issues surrounding carrying a firearm
    • Handcuffing and non-lethal weapon training
    • Emergency response and communication

3. Firearms Proficiency

  • Pass a written exam
  • Pass a firearms qualification course with a licensed instructor

4. Psychological Evaluation

  • May be required for some roles or employers

5. Application & Licensing

  • Submit your Level III application with DPS
  • Provide proof of training and pass a background check

Optional: Level IV – Personal Protection Officer (PPO)

For bodyguard or executive protection roles, officers must take an additional 15-hour Level IV course, including advanced firearms and tactical training.

Renewal and Continuing Education

  • Licenses must be renewed every 2 years
  • Continuing education is required for each level to maintain licensure
